The deadline is December 15.

The Hill Museum & Manuscript Library (HMML) announces the
establishment of the Dietrich Reinhart OSB Fellowship in Eastern
Christian Manuscript Studies, to be awarded annually for three years
beginning with the Academic Year 2013-2014. The fellowship has been
established through the generosity of Rebecca Haile and Jean Manas of
New York, New York, in memory of Br. Dietrich Reinhart OSB
(1949-2008). Br. Dietrich, 11th President of Saint John's University,
was a visionary leader who saw HMML as integral to the mission of
Saint John's Abbey and University, and enthusiastically promoted
HMML's work in the Middle East, Ethiopia, and India.

Awardees must be undertaking research on some aspect of Eastern
Christian studies requiring use of the digital or microfilm manuscript
collections at HMML. They must have already been awarded a doctoral
degree in a relevant field and have demonstrated expertise in the
languages and cultures of Eastern Christianity relevant for their
projects.

The Fellowship may be held for a full academic year (September 1-April
30) or for one semester (September 1-December 20; January 4-April 30).
The Fellowship provides accommodation in an apartment at the
Collegeville Institute on the Saint John's University campus; working
space at HMML; access to library, recreational and cultural activities
at Saint John's University; round-trip transportation; and a stipend
of up to $25,000 for a full academic year. Stipends will be adjusted
for less than a full year in residence.

Awardees will be expected to devote full attention to their research
projects while in residence. They will also be expected to participate
in a weekly seminar for Collegeville Institute resident scholars, to
present their research in a public lecture sponsored by HMML, and to
be a resource for HMML staff and other researchers during their stay.

Applicants are asked to provide: 1) a cover letter with current
contact information and an indication of availability for a full-year
or one-semester residency; 2) a description of the project to be
pursued, including an explanation of how access to HMML's resources
will be important for its success (1000-1500 words); 3) an updated
curriculum vitae; 4) two letters of reference.

The cover letter, project description, and CV should be sent by the
applicant to hmmlfellowships@csbsju.edu; letters should be sent by the
referees directly to the same email address or in hard copy to Julie
Dietman, HMML, Box 7300, Collegeville, MN 56321.

Applications for the Academic Year 2013-14 are due December 15, 2012.
The decision and acceptance process will be completed by the end of
February 2013.

The Hill Museum & Manuscript Library is a sponsored program of Saint
John's University, with the world's largest collection of research
material for the study of manuscripts. HMML holds microfilm and
digital images of more than 135,000 complete manuscripts. In addition
to Latin manuscripts, HMML's collections are particularly rich in
Ethiopic, Syriac, Arabic, and Armenian manuscripts.

Theme: Religion and Secularism in Modern Democracies
Type: International Interdisciplinary Summer School 2013
Institution: Forum Scientiarum, University of Tübingen
Location: Tübingen (Germany)
Date: 3.–7.6.2013
Deadline: 20.2.2013Topic

In this summer school this year's guest to the Unseld Lectures,
Charles Taylor, will discuss the place taken by religion, and often
by the associated culture, in defining the political identity of
modern democracies.

According to Taylor, we used to live in societies whose political
organizations were "guaranteed by some faith in, or adherence to God,
or some notion of ultimate reality" (A secular age 2007, p.1).
Accordingly, he argues that society as a whole imagined itself to
constitute a corporate religious body under moral norms ordained by
God; religious belief has had a great impact on all different spheres
of private as well as public life. Consequently, politics and
religion were highly related to one another.

In Taylor's narrative the story begins in the Middle Ages in an
enchanted world. With the Enlightenment between the sixteenth and
nineteenth century, along with the rise of modern science and the
modern state, however, sacred meanings are no longer expressed
directly in the universe around us. Taylor thinks that this Weberian
"disenchantment" initiated a process of secularization.

Secularism, in this understanding, describes the modern autonomous
differentiation of the secular and the religious sphere leading to
the eventual separation of church and state. However, Taylor rejects
the view that secularization necessarily is followed by a progressive
decline and eventual disappearance of religion. Thus, he does not
conceive secularist regimes as "bulwarks against religion" (The Power
of Religion in the Public Sphere 2011, p.56), but rather as a
consequence of the irreversible and growing internal diversity of
modern societies.

In his recent publications Taylor, thus, reflects the state's
relationship to religious diversity. In his opinion, in many Western
societies we presently are faced with a plurality of incompatible and
irreconcilable values, beliefs and worldviews of citizens.
Nevertheless, these different beliefs express themselves in public.
Therefore, Taylor ponders on the tensions between private religious
thinking and the political impact of religion in civil society and
asks how our religious beliefs interact with our political structures.

As Taylor observes that many liberal democratic polities are
grappling with these questions, his aim is to provide "an adequate
conceptual analysis of the constitutive principles of
secularism" (Secularism and Freedom of Conscience 2011, p.3). In his
account, these principles are respect for the moral equality of
persons on the one hand, and the protection of freedom of conscience
and religion on the other. The operative modes of these two
principles are the separation of church and state, and state
neutrality towards religious beliefs and other matters of conscience.
Further, he argues that there is a need to balance freedom of
conscience and respect of moral equality. The need to find such a
balance is particularly obvious with regard to minorities since their
religious practices in some cases have been taken to violate secular
norms and institutional arrangements.

Taylor also reminds us of the role religion plays to provide values
delineating national identity. He stresses the continuing importance
which religious markers play for the constitution of ethnic and
historical identities – particularly in those societies that are
forced to defend their integrity against external oppression. In some
cases religious and national value systems can not be separated
completely. Instead, existing religious symbols are often given a
secular interpretation.

- Taking its cues from Charles Taylor's meditations on secularism,
the summer school will primarily focus on following questions: Which
is the place of religion in modern societies? What deserves to be
called a secularist regime in contemporary democracies?

- May secularism be seen as a response to this diversity, not just of
religious positions, but of nonreligious positions as well? How to
distinct, if at all possible, religion and culture adequately?

- In which manner do secular regimes react to tensions between the
religious and the political sphere, and which of these manners are
democracy-friendly?

Program

The interdisciplinary summer school will take place at the Forum
Scientiarum of Tuebingen University, from June 3rd - June 7th, 2013.
During the summer school twenty graduate students and junior
scientists from all over the world will have the opportunity to
discourse Taylor´s ideas and concepts with him and the group as well
as to discuss their own projects: in the mornings selected
participants will present their own contributions to the topic to the
plenum; the afternoon sessions will be led by Charles Taylor and
dedicated to his academic work. The participants will also attend the
Unseld Lecture, held by Charles Taylor, and an interdisciplinary
colloquium, both open to the public.

Application procedure

To apply for the international summer school, applicants have to send
in a completed application form downloadable from this website (see
right column), including a CV according to usual standards.
Additionally, each applicant is required to submit an essay of up to
1000 words. For those interested in presenting their own work, this
essay should outline the project or case study to be introduced
during the summer school. Prospects who want to participate without
any personal presentation, this essay should delineate their specific
motivations for the summer school's topic. Deadline for the receipt
of complete applications (application form, CV, essay) is February
20th, 2013. A letter of admission will reach successful applicants by
March 15th.

There is no program fee. The Forum Scientiarum seeks to facilitate
the participation of competent students from all over the world –
limited financial resources should not affect your decision to apply.
The Forum Scientiarum is provided a limited fund by the Udo Keller
Foundation Forum Humanum, one of our supporting institutions, for
covering part of travel expenses. These can be applied for by the
applicants, but only selected participants with little or no funding
from other institutions may be granted partial funding. More
information will be provided upon acceptance.

Albeit, each participant (excluding participants residing in the area
of Tübingen) will be granted a fixed amount of 100 Euro for financial
support for overnight costs, meals, etc. Moreover, the Forum
Scientiarum will assist participants in finding inexpensive
accommodation.

  Call for Papers
Topographies of Popular Culture
25–26 October 2013
University of Tampere, Finland

From the venues of rock festivals and theme parks to the back alleys of Gotham City and the cinematic version of Hogwarts, popular culture contributes to collective perceptions of spatiality and recreates powerful imaginary topographies.
Topographies of Popular Culture offers a forum for multidisciplinary discussions of popular culture and space in contemporary American, European and Russian contexts. The conference seeks to explore representations of space as constructed in popular literary and visual genres and digital culture.

We invite presentations that examine how space and various popular genres are mutually constitutive in producing "popular" places (physical, social, and imagined) in the cultural and geographical settings of the USA, Europe, and Russia. We are especially interested in discussions and comparisons of "Western" and "Eastern" approaches to space as shaped by discourses of popular culture. In this kind of analysis, space is to be seen as a social construct that still exerts an active, emphatic influence: it both reflects socio-cultural processes and sets conditions for emerging hierarchies, standards, and values.

Topographies of Popular Culturewill focus on the relations between popular culture and dynamic spatial practices. Possible topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

-          the formation of space(s) in popular culture
-          space as an interconnected field between popular culture and instances of power (economic, political, symbolic, etc.)
-          geographies and archaeologies of space including Orientalism and Occidentalism; colonial, national and imperial space
-          gendered and queer popular spaces
-          the spaces and places of popular production and consumption
-          interrelations between the local and global in popular culture
-          connections between literary topoi and spatial topoi in popular fiction
-          spatial categories in popular genres (e.g. the fantastic worlds of fantasy; exotic worlds of romance; criminal spaces of detection; monstrous spaces of horror fiction)
-          new sites of action in contemporary literary, visual and digital texts
-          the "internationalization" of space in popular texts
-          utopian and dystopian spaces
-          heterotopias and rhizomatics
-          the language and semiotics of space and place

The conference languages are English and Russian. Prof. Eliot Borenstein (New York University), Prof. Birgit Neumann (University of Passau), and Prof. Shelley Streeby (University of California, San Diego) will act as keynote speakers.

Proposals for twenty-minute papers in English or Russian are invited from researchers working in cultural, literary, language and translation studies and other disciplines. Please submit an abstract of 250–350 wordsas a Word file with the author's name, affiliation, and contact details by 15 March 2013. Contributors can expect confirmation of their papers' acceptance by 8 April 2013.

The organizers intend to put together a themed volume, in which selected papers will be published as full-length articles.

CINEMA: JOURNAL OF PHILOSOPHY AND THE MOVING IMAGE invites submissions for
its 4th issue.

The fourth issue of CINEMA addresses the topic of philosophy of religion
and its connections with cinematic art. Film and religion have been
fruitful research topics taken in conjunction. Researchers in this
specific field have focused on particular periods (like the censorship era
in the USA), on representations of religious traditions and practices
(Sufism, for example), and on different theoretical approaches (such as
feminism) and broad topics (ethics, for instance) within film studies.
Film and philosophy have also had a productive relation in recent years.
Different philosophical fields have addressed film, from the philosophy of
art to the philosophy of mind, yet philosophy of religion has been a field
lacking in the discussion of film.

This issue aims at addressing this lack. CINEMA seeks essays that engage
with the cinematic art along with the work of prominent living
philosophers of religion like the Buddhist Mark Siderits, the Catholic
Christian Jean-Luc Marion, the Protestant Christian Nicholas P.
Wolterstorff, the Hindu Shyam Ranganathan, the Jewish Joshua Hoffman, or
the Muslim Hossein Nasr. In their discussion of cinema, contributions may
also draw on deeply influential philosophers like Dharmakīrti, Thomas
Aquinas, Søren Kierkegaard, Adi Shankara, Maimonides, or Averroes, and
thinkers who are linked with significant contemporary philosophical
currents like deconstruction (John D. Caputo) or who have presented
critical challenges to religion such as Ludwig Feuerbach and Friedrich
Nietzsche.

CINEMA asks for articles that take a philosophical approach to religion
and film, particularly developing close analyses of artworks of the moving
image. Proposals may address (but are not limited to) the following
themes:

• beauty
 • belief
 • death
 • evil and suffering
 • faith
 • immanence and transcendence
 • justice
 • morality
 • politics
 • religious diversity
 • religious experience
 • revelation
 • sacred scriptures
 • spirituality
 • tradition

The submission deadline is 28 February 2013 (for 500-word abstracts).
Prospective authors should submit a short CV along with the abstract. A
selection of authors will be invited to submit full papers according to
the journal guidelines. Acceptance of the abstract does not guarantee
publication, since all papers will be subject to double blind peer-review.
Submissions are accepted in Portuguese and English (and in French and
Spanish, but only from native speakers of these languages).

CINEMA also invites submissions to its special sections: interviews,
conference reports, and book reviews. For further details, please consult
the journal's web site (http://cjpmi.ifl.pt).

Feel free to contact the editor for this issue, Sérgio Dias Branco
(sdiasbranco@fl.uc.pt), on specific queries, or Patrícia Castello Branco
and Susana Viegas with general queries at cjpmi@fcsh.unl.pt.

EARLY RUSSIAN ITINERARIES : MOVEMENT AND THE SPACE OF THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE

The Russian, East European, and Eurasian Center (REEEC) at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign has opened a call for papers to present at the Ralph and Ruth Fisher Forum, to be held in Urbana, Illinois on Friday June 14th and Saturday June 15th, 2013.  This year's conference, "Early Russian Itineraries<http://www.reeec.illinois.edu/events/conferences/2013FF_RussianItineraries.html>" will focus on the production of Russian Imperial space by bringing to the fore the movement and circulation of material objects, peoples and ideas within and across the imperial domain. The chronological focus of this event will be on the long eighteenth century (1650-1825), but applications from scholars working on earlier periods are encouraged as well.

Though absolute properties of Russian geography-most notably, the constraints placed on human action by Russia's size, climate, and position in global state systems-are frequently invoked in accounts of Russia's history, relatively few studies have attempted to think through the communicative processes involved in the making of Russia as space.  As a result, to borrow the words of the 19th century human geographer Paul Vidal de la Blache, "one pictures the earth as 'the stage upon which man's [sic] activities take place,' without reflecting that the stage itself is alive."  This is perhaps especially true of the medieval and early modern formation of the Russian empire, whose communicative geography and system of human-made relations remain understudied.  This is particularly to be regretted, because without an understanding of movement, we lack a clear picture of the making of Russian imperial space: the genesis, reach, and footprint of imperial culture, politics, and society.  "We produce and reproduce space through our movements," Richard White has argued: this conference seeks to situate our stories about the making imperial Russian life within such an expanded, process-oriented understanding of space.

Broadly synthetic papers as well as archival-based work grappling with the most basic questions of physical movement are encouraged for submission. Also welcome is work that attempts to illuminate simple empirical questions such as: What exactly was being moved? Where did it go? How was it moved, how often and by whom? Desired presentations include those considering such issues as: to what extent were new or existing patterns of movement bound up with the emergence of empire in Russian life? What influence did these patterns have on Russia's political, social or cultural positions in the world?  To what extent can such spatial analysis help us rethink issues of continuity, change and difference in Russian history, across both international and chronological divides? Also requested are papers introducing sustained comparative and interdisciplinary dimensions to the discussion; situating Russia's movement systems within broader histories and cultures of movement. Additionally, an objective of this conference is to create new frameworks for scholarship on medieval and early imperial Russian history.

Please submit paper abstracts (250 words in .doc or .pdf file format) to the conference organizer, Rachel Koroloff (rkorolo2@illinois.edu) by Friday, November 30th, 2012. Please include, "Fisher Forum 2013" in the subject heading. Conference participants will be notified of their acceptance by January 1st, 2013. Please note that discussion will be based on pre-circulated presentation materials or paper abstracts; potential presenters are advised to plan accordingly. Graduate students are strongly encouraged to apply.

Partial financial support for travel and housing expenses will be offered to eligible conference participants as funding permits. Supplementary funds may also be available for eligible applicants to the Russian, East-European, Eurasian Center's Summer Research Lab. Certain restrictions do apply, please see the REEEC website (http://www.reeec.illinois.edu/srl/) for more information.

Please contact co-organizers Rachel Koroloff (rkorolo2@illinois.edu) or John Randolph (jwr@illinois.edu), with any questions about this event.

Call for Papers – The Varieties of Russian Modernity: Rethinking Religion,
Secularism, and the Influence of Russia in the Modern World

Deadline for Proposals: December 1, 2012

Deadline for Paper Submissions for Accepted Participants: May 7, 2013.

Symposium to be held at the Russian Presidential Academy of National
Economy and Public Administration, Prospket Vernadskogo 82, Moscow, Russia,
June 7-9, 2013.

Paper proposals of approximately 750-1000 words are invited for an
international and interdisciplinary symposium on the topic of The Varieties
of Russian Modernity: Rethinking Religion, Secularism, and the Influence of
Russia in the Modern World. The symposium will take place under the
auspices of the Center for Russian Studies at the Russian Presidential
Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (RANEPA) in Moscow,
Russia over the weekend of June 7-9, 2013. It will bring together
approximately 15 scholars in the humanities and social sciences for a
series of intensive roundtable discussions around emerging
interdisciplinary theoretical approaches to religion, secularization, and
modernity. The symposium's organizers, Alyssa DeBlasio (Russian, Dickinson
College), Ana Siljak (History, Queen's University), and Christopher Stroop
(History, RANEPA), hope to facilitate the exploration of this broad topic
from a variety of perspectives. Contributions focused on areas such as art,
literature and culture, as well as philosophy, religion, sociology, and
politics, are welcome. Proposals should also address at least one of the
following five sub-themes:

- The Religious and the Secular in Imperial Russia

- The Soviet Experience

- The Russian Emigration

- Modern Russian-Jewish Experience

- The Religious and the Secular in Post-Soviet Russia.

The primary goal of the symposium is to bring the varieties of modern
Russian experience to bear on the flourishing interdisciplinary literature
on religion and secularism that has emerged in the wake of decades of
critical engagement with the sociological secularization thesis. Many of
the leading contributors to this literature, including the philosopher
Charles Taylor and the sociologist José Casanova, have suggested that in
order to better assess religion and secularization, serious engagement with
non-Western experience is necessary. The organizers intend the symposium
and projected conference volume to be, in part, a response to this call.
Scholars in the humanities and social sciences who draw on modern Russian
experience to enrich the above-mentioned discussions of religion,
secularization, and secularism are invited to apply.

The Russian experience can help to advance these discussions in part by
testing what is and is not exclusive to the historical experience of the
Latin West. This comparative and contextualized approach can also help us
investigate both Western influence on Russian developments and the little
explored Russian religious and intellectual influences on the modern West
(including the influence of the Russian emigration after 1917).

Invited participants will be required to submit their papers to all other
participants by May 7, 2013, so that all participants will be able to read
all papers before the symposium takes place. After the symposium, the
participants will be asked to revise and resubmit their papers for
publication in a projected conference volume to be placed with an academic
press and co-edited by Ana Siljak and Christopher Stroop. The working
languages of the conference will be English and Russian, but the organizers
strongly encourage the submission of papers in English, as the projected
volume will be published in English. Once the final list of participants
has been established, the organizers will provide a bibliography of
relevant theoretical readings to be read by all participants before the
symposium. These steps will ensure fruitful discussions and facilitate the
production of a more coherent volume of essays.

RANEPA will provide participants with accommodations for the duration of
the symposium and with visa support as necessary. In addition, in the
absence of other sources of funding, a limited number of travel awards of
up to $1000 are available for invited early career scholars traveling from
outside Russia for whom travel expenses would represent a financial
hardship.

Proposals should specify which of the five sub-themes listed above the
projected paper will engage. It is possible to transcend the boundaries
between these categories, and papers that are relevant to more than one
sub-theme are welcome. The sub-themes will be used, however, to place
participants on panels for roundtable discussions, and will also
potentially be used to organize the projected conference volume. Please
send your cv along with your proposal. Selected participants will be
notified in December 2012. Proposals and cvs should be sent to all three
organizers:

Alyssa DeBlasio (deblasia@dickinson.edu)

Ana Siljak (siljaka@queensu.ca)

Christopher Stroop (cstroop@gmail.com)
