КОНФЕРЕНЦИИ СЕМИНАРЫ
Исторический факультет Санкт-Петербургского государственного университета проводит:
Межвузовский студенческо-аспирантский конгресс: «Переходные периоды в истории»
07–11 апреля 2008 г.
Контекст. Осенью 2004 г. Студенческое научное общество (СНО) Исторического факультета СПбГУ организовало конференцию, посвященную 70-летию Исторического факультета СПбГУ. Весной 2006 г. состоялся конгресс молодых ученых «Институты власти и идеология в истории Европы, США и России», в рамках которого были рассмотрены вопросы общей концептуальной роли государственных структур. По результатам конгресса вышел сборник материалов. Весной 2007 г. при содействии администрации факультета студенческий совет организовал совместно с Санкт-Петербургским им. В. Б. Бобкова Филиалом Российской таможенной академии межвузовский студенческо-аспирантский конгресс «Изменяющаяся Россия в контексте глобализации», на котором были затронуты различные аспекты глобализации в контексте истории России и ее взаимоотношений с другими государствами. На весну 2008 г. было принято решение назначить проведение следующего тематического студенческо-аспирантского конгресса «Переходные периоды в истории».
Формат. Студенческо-аспирантский конгресс «Переходные периоды в истории», планируемый Историческим факультетом СПбГУ, является мероприятием, продолжающим традицию ежегодных тематических конгрессов молодых ученых, проводимых на базе Исторического факультета СПбГУ. Целью его проведения является концептуальное осмысление этапных моментов в мировой истории. Основной формой проведения конгресса являются секции, которые строятся по хронологическому и территориальному принципам. В рамках секций конгресса предполагается привлечь внимание к характерным особенностям переходных периодов; причинам, их вызвавшим; политическим и социально-экономическим аспектам. Также предполагается организация круглых столов, их участникам предоставляется возможность обсудить отдельные темы, связанные с изменением массового сознания; анализом культурных тенденций и интеллектуальных течений; в рамках историософского осмысления переходных периодов. Также внимание будет уделено выдающимся личностям в переходные периоды и их переоценке в историческом контексте; международным отношениям; анализу современности с точки зрения теории переходных периодов. Конгресс является объединяющим фактором как для специалистов-историков, так и для ученых, чьи интересы связаны с изучением политических, экономических, юридических вопросов и, по нашему мнению, будет иметь важное научное и культурное значение. Таким образом, мероприятие обещает быть актуальным для представителей различных гуманитарных направлений.
В работе конгресса предполагается выделение следующих секций и круглых столов:

The Fourth Fitzwilliam Colloquium on Russian History and Culture

"Media in Flux: Information Technologies in Russian Culture"
Building on the success of the last Fitzwilliam Conference ("Crossing
Borders: Translations and Transpositions in Russian Culture"), which was
devoted to the interrelationships and interpenetrations of cultural genres
and forms, the 2008 conference will consider the interplay of cultural
technologies, especially in periods of innovation and change. What have
been the cultural implications of technological change? How has the broader
"ecology" of culture been affected by the introduction and development of
e.g. writing, printing and other modes of duplication, electronic storage
and transmission, technologies for the storage and projection of images,
etc. etc.? To what extent are existing cultural technologies supplanted,
restricted, or modified, but the appearance of new technologies? How have
notionally competing technologies adapted to one another (e.g.
film-television-video-digital recording; live performance-sound recording;
letter-writing-email-texting; painting-printed illustration;
hand-copying-typewriting-printing and other forms of duplication;
telephones-internet chatrooms, etc. etc.). We are interested in assembling
panels relating to a broad range cultural media, and touching on all
periods of Russian cultural history.

The Biennial Conference in Philosophy, Religion and Culture will take
place 3 – 5 October 2008.
Theme: ‘God, Freedom and Nature.”
Papers may treat one or more of these themes in a manner that contributes
to a discussion of the three. Issues and questions that might be addressed include: science and religion; freedom and conscience in a

"Religious Ritual, Cognition and Culture", Aarhus 28-30 May 2008
Hosted by the Religion, Cognition and Culture (RCC) priority area, University of Aarhus, Denmark, Southern Denmark University Odense and the International Association for the Cognitive Science of Religion (IACSR), with the generous support of Carlsberg Foundation, Aarhus University Research Foundation, European Science Foundation, and the Faculty of Theology, University of Aarhus.
This conference is immediately followed by a workshop on the following theme:
"Religion and Cognition in Context" Aarhus 31 May - 1 June, 2008
Hosted by the European Science Foundation, the Religion, Cognition and Culture (RCC) priority area, University of Aarhus and the Faculty of Theology, University of Aarhus.
The IACSR will also be conducting its General Assembly on May 30th, immediately followed by a Presidential Address by Prof. E. Thomas Lawson, Western Michigan University and Queen's University Belfast.
Participants can register for both events. The "Religious Ritual, Cognition and Culture" registration fee is DKK 500, for students the price is DKK 300. Registration for the "Religion and Cognition in Context" is free of charge.
A little over 40 years ago, the Royal Society of London hosted a conference on ritualization and behaviour in animals and man [Phil.Trans.Roy.Soc.Lon. 251 (772) 1966]. It was a signal event that influenced the following decades of ritual research. One of the strengths of the conference was the wide variety of disciplines represented by the participants. The meeting brought sociologists, anthropologists, ethnologist, biologists, ethologists, psychologists and art historians together in order to explore human ritual behavior in its biological, social and cultural contexts. Since then, the rise of the neural and cognitive sciences has moved the intricate dynamics between biology and culture center stage. And with it we witnessed the exciting rise of cooperative research clusters and teams which consist of scholars and scientists from a wide variety of natural, human and social sciences.
During the past two decades, the cultural sciences have drawn inspiration, theories and models from the cognitive and (during the past decade) neural sciences. An astounding variety of research results has given us insight into human abilities and domains such as consciousness, categorization, memory, perception, social cognition, morality, language, etc. which have significantly changed our understanding of human culture and cognition. With the pioneering work of Lawson, McCauley, Boyer and Whitehouse, we are now in the position to address fundamental issues which the cognitive study of rituals and ritualization raise for comparative religion, anthropology and psychology. The possibilities of fruitful interdisciplinary research have only just begun in the field of ritual studies. This conference hopes to provide a context for further intensive cooperation and discussion. Where the pioneers of the cognitive science of religion with good reason were inspired by cognitive linguistics, the current increase of knowledge in the experimental and neurological sciences encourages us to explore further new avenues.
The study of religious rituals and ritualization can gain from the insights, methodologies and theories of experimental and neurological sciences. But this ‘bottom-up' approach is not the only path of inspiration. Just as important is research which focusses on the ‘top-down' approach, i.e. from culture and social relations to cognition and neural patterns. Studies of ritualized behavior in different cultural, social and historical contexts clearly expand the database of behaviors that can be studied experimentally and neurologically. In order to understand further human action and cognitive representation, cultural and social scientists can contribute insights on how certain types of behavior latch on to various cultural patterns. An obvious example is why do we find a universal tendency in all human cultures to assume or explain ritual behavior religiously, i.e. with reference to gods, ancestors and spirits? It would seem that ritual behavior is universal among most animals. Why are certain types of rituals thought to be religious in the human species? Answers to this and similar questions can enrich historical, sociological and anthropological studies of religious behavior, but also cognitive and neurological scientists can gain subsequent insight into how cultural traditions influence universal mental dispositions.
The organizers encourage papers from all relevant disciplines that address the dynamics of religious ritual, cognition and culture. Both empirical and theoretical papers are welcome.
Papers consist of 30 minute presentations and 15 minutes for discussion. Brief papers consist of 20 minute presentations and 10 minutes for discussion.

The Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies (CREEES) at Stanford University invites applications to its interdisciplinary M.A. degree program in Russian, East European, and Eurasian studies for the academic year 2008-2009. The application deadline has been extended to 31 January 2008; we must have all application materials in hand by that date. This M.A. program is designed to be completed in one intensive academic year (nine months). We expect an applicant to have completed at least three years or the equivalent of college-level Russian or other language of the former Soviet Union or Eastern Europe prior to starting the M.A. program. Students with a variety of academic backgrounds are welcome to apply; we expect an applicant to have completed at least some course work in basic disciplines like history, politics, economics, literature, etc., relating to Russia, the former Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, and/or Eurasia. An applicant must supply transcripts, GRE scores, at least three letters of recommendation, and a statement of purpose. A limited number of FLAS Fellowships are available that cover full tuition plus stipend for living expenses. DUKE UNIVERSITY M.A. IN SLAVIC AND EURASIAN STUDIES
Duke University's Department of Slavic and Eurasian Studies invites
applications for its Master of Arts program for Fall 2008. This
two-year program prepares students for further academic study in a
regionally related discipline as well as careers in government,
business, journalism, and nonprofit work. Master's students at Duke
may elect to concentrate in 1) Russian literature and culture; 2)
Slavic linguistics; or 3) Eurasian studies. Our program aims to
develop students' proficiency in a variety of languages (we offer
Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian, Hungarian, Pashto, Persian, Polish,
Romanian, Russian, and Turkish) and to offer them training in the
wide-ranging fields of our faculty expertise, which include area and
cultural studies, cultural anthropology, gender studies, history,
linguistics, media and film, performing arts studies, and aspects of
comparative literature, theory, and translation. Our Department
collaborates closely in courses and activities with the Duke Program
in Literature, the Marxism and Society Program, the Film/Video/Digital
Program, the English Department, the Romance Studies Department, the
History Department, the Interdepartmental Program in Linguistics, the

Our students benefit from the combined resources of Duke University
and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, including
extensive Slavic and East European library collections and a joint
Title VI Center which hosts a wide array of lectures, workshops, and
conferences with visiting national and international experts. Students
also have the opportunity to consult and take courses with the faculty
and visiting media fellows of the DeWitt Wallace Center for
Communication and Journalism, and to use its important video archives
of news programs from Soviet and Russian television, as well as other
materials.
Financial support for full-time students is available in various forms
(fellowships, teaching assistantships, summer awards, and travel
support for students delivering papers at conferences). The Center for
Slavic, Eurasian and East European Studies offers 4 fellowships per
year for the study of a Slavic language. Prospective students with

fellowships available for support of graduate study.
