- социокультурную актуализацию исторического научного поиска и конституируемой им сферы знания;

- утверждение междисциплинарной роли исторического знания в современной системе научного знания;

- утверждение общегуманитарной функции системы методов исторического познания, сформировавшейся на протяжении последних столетий;

- актуализация научной поверки любого обращения к культурам прошлого в культуре современной;

- обсуждение возможных и состоявшихся реформаций исторического знания в современном мире;

- динамичную типологизацию различных видов исторических произведений в контексте создающих их культур;

The Twelfth International Colloquium on Gregory of Nyssa will focus on
his trinitarian theology through a detailed study of the third book of
the Contra Eunomium (CE III). As has become customary during the past
Colloquia, the main papers will offer a commentary on the work as a
whole. Besides these main papers, the conference program will also
foresee ample room for about 30-35 offered papers of 25 minutes duration
(including discussion). These offered papers can focus on any issue
directly related to the writings, thought, philosophical or theological
context of Gregory of Nyssa. Besides papers on Gregory of Nyssa "in
general", we are of course especially interested in offered papers that
support and further the work done on CE III in the main lectures. As
such, papers on the following subjects are particularly welcome:

- The use of the Bible and biblical hermeneutics in CE III
- Analysis of terms of the trinitarian theology in CE III
- Analysis of images, comparisons, rhetorical figures in CE III
- Influence of ancient philosophy on CE III
- Comparisons of selected passages or themes with other works of
Gregory
- Comparisons with other thinkers of the 4th century (e.g. Basil of
Caesarea, Athanasius, Gregory of Nazianzen
- Philological commentaries on selected passages
- Contributions on the textual transmission of CE III
- Analysis of ancient translations of CE III (esp. Syriac)
- Contextualising CE III within the entire "Eunomian Controversy"

Thus, scholars of all disciplines working on Gregory are invited to
submit papers about the main subject of the Colloquium and questions
related to it. Also junior scholars with a research focus on Gregory are
encouraged to submit a proposal. Finally, also all current projects on
Gregory of Nyssa (bibliographies, electronic tools, editions,
translations, ...) are invited to present their goals, strategies and
preliminary results.

Deadline for submitting paper proposals: June, 1

The following languages are welcome: English, German, French, Italian,
Spanish.

Paper proposals should provide the following information:
- Name
- Current postal address and e-mail
- Institutional affiliation
- Preliminary title of the paper
- Short explanation (200-300 words): a summary of the content of the
paper; why it is important; how it will mark progress in Gregory of
Nyssa research; how the argumentation will proceed.

The Scientific Committee will take into consideration all paper
proposals. If we will get too many proposals the final decision will be
left to the Scientific Committee.

The Journal of Philosophy and Scripture is seeking submissions for an
upcoming special issue.
http://www.philosophyandscripture.org/

Submission deadline Special Issue "Scripture and the Sword": August 31st,
2010

The events of the past decade have dramatically reawakened, particularly
in Western consciousness, the way in which religion and violence can
intersect. JPS wishes to contribute to this dialogue. In the special
issue, we are interested in articles that explore the conjunction of
scripture and violence. Some possible topics include…

• The historical relationship and/or development between violence and
scripture
• Do different scriptural traditions offer greater or lesser possibilities
for violence?
• Is violence always possible when related to scripture?
• Do certain scriptural traditions allow or disallow different kinds of
violence—e.g. physical, socio-political, economic, or other?
• Does scripture provide a plausible justification for or denial of violence?
• In an increasingly secular age, does scripture provide a relevant
justification for or denial of violence?
• What is the relationship between culture, scripture, and violence?
• Do the God of scripture and the God of philosophy differ with regard to
their violent potential?
• What role does violence play within scriptural texts—literal
endorsement, metaphorical, other?
• Who can properly speak on behalf of scripture's acceptance or denial of
violence?
• Is scripture merely captive to socio-political figures and movements
that use it violently?

Guidelines for submission are found on our website To submit electronic
copies or to be added to e-mail list and receive future announcements,
contact philosophyandscripture@gmail.com.  We ARE ALSO ACCEPTING
submissions for our regular issues and March 31st 2010 is the date to be
considered for our spring issue.

About Us

The Journal of Philosophy and Scripture is an e-journal dedicated to
reading scripture in light of philosophy and to examining philosophy in
light of scripture. The Journal's task is informed by three primary aims:
(1) To encourage philosophical discussions of religion to attend to the
primary sacred texts (e.g. the Bible, the Qur'an, the Bhagavad-Gita) that
fundamentally shape the religions under discussion.
(2) To encourage a process of mutual reflection by means of which both
philosophy and scripture may be more clearly illuminated.
(3) To do the above with a keen eye to possible effects on the ways in
which we practice philosophy and religion.
JPS is committed to fostering discussion involving a wide range of
philosophical perspectives and religious traditions. We are especially
interested in papers that engage directly with specific passages of
scripture, but we also welcome papers that deal with general issues
relating to the intersection of philosophy and scripture.

God is in the details. A reflection on methodology in the humanities

A conference organized within the activities of the Graduate School
Humanae Litterae, University of Milan, via Festa del Perdono 7, Milan,
June 10-11, 2010.

Conference website: http://users.unimi.it/godetails/
Email: godetails@unimi.it

CALL FOR PAPERS
We invite papers for an interdoctoral conference, aimed at a reflection on
the methodology in the humanities. The main focus of the conference will
be on texts, considered as the common ground between the different
disciplines. The starting point is Erich Auerbac's statement, according to
which, starting from a kind of observation focused on detail, on the
single distinctive mark - through a gradual widening of the perspective
beyond the limits of specialized knowledge - it is possible to set the
terms of a discourse which interprets the relationship between general and
particular:

It is patiently impossible to establish a synthesis by assembling all the
particulars. Perhaps we shall be able to do so by selecting characteristic
particulars and following up their implications. this method consists in
finding unusually fertile areas or key problems on which it is rewarding
to concentrate, because they open up a knowledge of a broader context and
cast a light on entire historical landscapes. (Erich Auerbach,  Literary
Language and Its Public in Late Latin Antiquity and in the Middle Ages)

On the basis of the motto chosen for the title of the conference - used by
artists and intellectuals coming from different backgrounds, such as
Johann Wolfgang Goethe, Gustave Flaubert, Aby Warburg e Mies Van der Rohe
- papers are encouraged to analyse one or more details of any object which
can be read as text, in order to single out its distinctive features and,
subsequently, to provide its interpretation in a wider perspective. The
research horizon shall be widened in order to highlight and interpret the
dialogue the text establishes with systems on a higher level (cultural,
historical, cognitive, etc).

Abstracts could start from the following questions:

-       how does one comprehend the conceptual world (frame) of an author
starting from the analysis of a single portion of a text (a passage in a
literary or philosophical work, a historical essay, a painting, a
sculpture, a photograph, a sequence in a film)?
-       what kind of information does the birth (or the disappearing) of an
artistic form provide on human cognitive skills or on a given historical
period?
-       how is it possible to link the details of spatial organization to a
wider reading (aesthetical, cultural, or historical) of the landscape?
-       how is it possible to put forward a hypothesis on human mind
starting form single data (for example a logical paradox or a mathematical
formula)?
-       What kind of relationship is it possible to establish between a single
case-study (for example one of local history) o a detail in a source (of
any kind, from the official document to a film) and wider dynamics
(historical, cultural, political or social)?
-       how is it possible to assess the different ways of approaching texts?
What are the advantages of the "sample method" What different ways of
research can integrate it?

Papers shall start from a concrete analysis of the object of research and
highlight aspects of the methodology, or foster a reflection on it.
Abstracts proposing original applications of the suggested research
perspective or engaging in a critical reflection on other already
experimented methodologies are particularly encouraged. Papers from
outside the humanities are also welcome, provided that they stick to the
suggested reflection.

Young researchers - graduate students in particular - are invited to
submit. Each session will be chaired by a faculty professor, while eminent
specialists will be discussants.

Discussants:
Carlo Ginzburg (Scuola Normale Superiore)
Pier Vincenzo Mengaldo (Università  degli Studi di Padova)
Mario Vegetti (Università  degli Studi di Pavia)

Chairs:
Giovanni Agosti (Università  degli Studi di Milano)
Caroline Patey (Università  degli Studi di Milano)
Paolo Spinicci (Università  degli Studi di Milano)

Submission guidelines:
Abstracts for 20-minute presentation (with additional 10-minutes for
discussion) should not exceed 500 words with an additional page for
references and/or data, and should only include the title of the
presentation. They should be sent as .pdf or .doc attachments to this
address: godetails@unimi.it. The body of the email should also include
paper title, author's name and affiliation. Proposals will be anonymously
peer-reviewed by the scientific committee in collaboration with the
Council of the Humanae Litterae School. Selected papers will be published
in the proceedings of the conference. The official languages of the
conference are Italian and English.

Important dates:
March 21st, 2010 deadline for abstracts submission.
April 1st, 2010 notification of acceptance.

Organizing committee:
Luca Daino, Maddalena Giovannelli, Sara Sullam, Stefano Versace.

Scientific committee:
Beatrice Barbieri, Fabio Berio, Luigi Campi, Luca Daino, Marco Fumagalli,

Christian Theological Research Fellowship Call for Papers

Theme: Mission, Ecumenism, and the Centennial of Edinburgh 1910

In 1910, the World Missionary Conference was held in Edinburgh, Scotland. Protestant understandings

of mission and missionary work were discussed along with exhortations for cooperation and the promo-

tion of Christian unity. Many consider the Conference to be the start of the modern Ecumenical Move-

ment. In honor of the Conference centennial, the CTRF calls for papers on the topics of the 1910 Edin-

burgh World Missionary Conference and its initial or continuing influence on Christian mission and ecu-

menism.

Papers may pursue one of the following topics pertinent to the World Missionary Conference:

1. the state of Christian missionary theory and practice in the world today. Missionary work, in

particular, has come under scrutiny, due to increased contact with people from other religions

and cultures. Issues such as evangelism, proselytism, and interfaith relations have become par-

ticular points of controversy.

2. the state of Christan ecumenism and interfaith dialogue, including: the definition or theology of

ecumenism, its historical development in the wake of Edinburgh, and contemporary challenges

and prospects for ecumenism and interfaith relations. CTRF particularly invites proposals that

provide insight into various expressions of ecumenism, and constructively promote Christian

cooperation and unity in the future.

The deadline for submission is Monday, March 15, 2010. Please submit an electronic abstract, including

a working title (750 word maximum), in Microsoft Word format, along with any pertinent personal in-

formation to Bernie Van De Walle, President, Christian Theological Research Fellowship, at bvande-

walle@ambrose.edu.
